 Episode 68 - The Emperor’s New Groove

Hannah, Dawson and Philip review and discuss The Emperor's New Groove from Disney Animation. This fan favorite celebrated its 20th anniversary in December 2020, and its troubled production signaled the end to the heyday of classic Disney animation that experienced a major revival in the 1990s. This wacky fable takes advantage of David Spade's sarcastic brand of humor, which contrasts nicely with John Goodman's good-natured appeal. Add in two delightful antagonists, and this film provides a recipe for 80 minutes of pure fun. Follow @thawedcast on Twitter and Instagram. Email: genresavvypodcast@gmail.com.  Episode 69 - Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Philip and Dawson revisit an ambitious attempt by Disney Animation to release a non-musical, action-adventure film aimed at older kids and fans of genre fiction. Patterned after classic historical adventure serials, which in turn spawned films like Indiana Jones and The Mummy, Atlantis: The Lost Empire seeks to immerse the viewer in a wondrous, fully-realized ancient world. Milo Thatch is a linguistics and cartography professor who guides a large expedition to the lost continent of Atlantis, now a ruined underground city. Due to ill-fated experiments to weaponize their secret power source, Atlantis is a shadow of its former self, but will this encounter with the outside world help restore this lost civilization? *Correction* Philip misremembers the Venus de Milo statue as missing her head, when in fact she is only missing her arms. Dawson and Philip take a trip back to 2016 with Japanese animated film Your Name from writer/director Makoto Shinkai and CoMix Wave Films. Two high-schoolers from different worlds find themselves mysteriously intertwined as they each experience episodes of missing time, quickly learning that they've been periodically switching bodies for a day at a time. Taki is an artist living in busy Tokyo and Mitsuha is a Shinto ritual performer in rural Japan. While their memories of being in each other’s body are vague, they learn a great deal about each other through the notes they leave in their phones. Things take a turn when Taki discovers that Mitsuha lives three years in the past. This complicates any chance the two have of meeting in person, as their connection's strength seems tied to a passing comet in 2013—an event that holds great significance to Mitsuha and her spiritual destiny. Episode 85 - One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)

Hannah, Jodi, and Philip discuss the 1961 Disney film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. This was the first feature-length film to use Xerox photocopying to save on animation costs. At the domestic box office it went on to gross around 850 million in today’s dollars, second only to Snow White (1937) in this particular ranking (animated domestic grosses, adjusted for inflation). It would inspire several spin-off films and an animated series, and was based on a popular children’s novel by Dodie Smith. The film adheres closely to the novel, which established the iconic look and personality of Cruella De Vil. The film’s unique art style, modern setting and yuppie protagonists were a departure from Disney’s usual classic aesthetic, offering relevant insight on parenting and consumerism. Episode 90 - The Shining

Jodi, Dawson and Philip review and discuss Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining' from 1980. A film that has gone on to influence numerous filmmakers and storytellers, 'The Shining' is an adaptation of Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name. These two creative powerhouses were sure to deliver an enduring film; however King ultimately disapproved of Kubrick's vision for the film. 'The Shining' got mixed reviews upon release, but its iconic performances from Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, combined with its subtle atmospheric detail and groundbreaking cinematography would quickly ignite a full-blown reevaluation that would secure the film as a canonical classic. For those who have struggled with the isolation of quarantine and an illusory sense of time, this film uniquely captures the danger of settling into the discordant malaise of a late-twentieth century existential nightmare.
